机构简介:

The Centre for Technology, Ethics, Law and Society (TELOS) is a Research Centre at The Dickson Poon School of Law which seeks to engage in rigorous, policy-relevant research exploring the legal, ethical and social implications ofnew and emerging technologies.

TELOS is the brainchild of Professor Roger Brownsword,a leading legal scholar and bioethicist, who recognized the need for scholarly examination of the legal, ethical, social and regulatory issues arising from the emergence of new technologies, particularly rapid changes to information communication technologies, medicine, manufacturing technologies, robotics, and neurotechnologies, as well as their wide-ranging applications to important policy sectors such as the securities and defence industries, trade and commerce, health services, and the leisure industry.

One feature of contemporary technological development, particularly those reliant on digital technologies, is their extensive reach and application that transcends the borders of nation states. Such developments often pose acute challenges for law and governance in responding to contemporary societal needs and concerns, particularly where human communities and problems are increasingly understood in global terms, rather than defined exclusively or predominantly by geographical proximity or national boundaries. Hence, although launched in 2007, the Centre has been housed within theTransnational Law Instituteand supported by the Dickson Poon Gift.
